Ultra-Running: The Wedding Edition

Umbrellas? But it's a beautiful day in Edinburgh... The Ultra Training  In May I had the 24 hour race which meant that I had 24 hours of thinking time to come up with some vows. That didn’t quite work out as planned as I went to sleep after 23 hours. And 23 hours just wasn’t quite enough time for me to get any vows confirmed in my head. Although I could have written numerous vows to my cup-of-pasta. I am extremely excited about running in Glenmore just so I can eat the other packet that I have left in the pantry. So I came back from Holland begging the Humanist to write the vows which I now cannot remember anyway. All international guests should be greeted at the airport with a sweaty hug. It wasn’t so much of a rule than it was a bad habit. So with international guest number one arriving (Mareta), I attempted to squeeze in a run before her arrival time. Too much flat cleaning meant that that run needed to be one to the airport. Mareta’s an athlete herself so...

Clyde Stride

Glasgow Tanning For those of you who have come across this blog in a frantic search for who that guy running as NUMBER ONE was for the Clyde Stride, then I’ll give you a wee break down of the big fella’s training…  January 2013 – Gran Canaria Marathon. A solid first effort marathon for Scott and bonding session with Norm and Ally. February 2013 – Takes a rest and starts to think beyond marathons. Enters the D33. Amazing breakfast at the Park Inn Aberdeen the following morning. April 2013 – Takes a fancy to Lee and enters the Clyde Stride. I commit myself as a buddy runner. May 2013 – Training takes full flight. Our flat is a war zone. We switch from fish finger sandwiches to fish finger wraps. This is an athlete’s flat now. June 2013 – International visitors arrive from all directions. A weddi...

2013 IAU World 24 Hour Championships, Steenbergen

Pre-Steenbergen Rambling My arrival at 24-hour running has been a bit of a whirlwind. A year and a half ago I took a train to Wales to piggy-back on my sister’s crewing position for New Zealand runner Matt Bixley who was running the Commonwealth 24 Hour Championships in Llandudno. I had no idea this running existed. The runners go around in circles. All night. You had to wipe your hands with nappy wipes so that you didn’t give Matt unnecessary germs. Ok, maybe that was just a Matt thing… There were these three Scottish lassies running; Debbie Martin-Consani, Sharon Law and Pauline Walker. Who were these people? I cheered for them because they were from Scotland but I didn’t really understand their greatness. There was just one female representative for New Zealand at this race and I figured that maybe New Zealand needed some more lady runners for their team. So essentially I started running 24 hour runs because my country NEEDED me to. What a saviour. Less than a year ago I r...
